REGENT Seaglider Prototypes

REGENT Craft is an American company designing and building electric seaglider vehicles for coastal transportation. A seaglider is a wing-in-ground-effect craft that operates a few meters off the water's surface and couples the high speed of an airplane with the low operating cost of a boat.

Axalp Technologies has supported REGENT Craft with several design and analysis tasks for their prototype vehicles.

First Steps

Subscale Prototype

The Axalp Technologies team assisted REGENT with the design of their first prototype seaglider, a 25% scale version of the full-sized vehicle. Specifically, Axalp Technologies contributed significantly to the structural design of the wing and tail, as well as to the design of the rear hydrofoil deployment and retraction mechanism.

After fabrication, the subscale was successfully test-flown on the waters of Narragansett Bay.

Mechanical Design

As REGENT moved their focus from the subscale prototype to a full-sized vehicle prototype, the Axalp Technologies team also lent their support. Axalp took on some specialized design tasks, including critical design work for the tail and tail attachment, as well as battery mount design.

The battery mount design had to include provision for removal and installation, to support battery swaps. Axalp designed a mounting system in composite material and metal to allow this and to meet the required operating loads.

For the tail design, Axalp completed a full detailed design, plus static and dynamic analysis of the all-composite assembly. Our work included analysis of rudder loads and joint stiffness of the structure. Mounting provisions were made for actuators, sensors, antennas and lights. Axalp delivered complete manufacturing drawings to REGENT, and provided advice and support during parts fabrication.
