Electra.aero EL2 Prototype Aircraft

The American company Electra.aero is building aircraft to help decarbonize aviation. Their hybrid-electric, Ultra Short aircraft is designed to make regional air mobility more accessible.

Axalp Technologies has been assisting Electra with the design and fabrication of their EL2 proof-of-concept prototype aircraft.

Into the Air

Airframe Design & Analysis

The primary task for Axalp Technologies in supporting Electra's EL2 aircraft was the complete design & analysis and fabrication of the fuselage, including horizontal and vertical tails. This assembly is engineered completely in carbon fiber materials for highest performance. Axalp conducted the entire structural design, from top-level down to individual parts design, material selection, and hardware specification.

Getting it built

Fabrication

Axalp was responsible for overseeing the fabrication of the EL2 fuselage and tail assembly. We worked with our network of trusted suppliers to oversee the fabrication of all parts, conduct inspections, and then lead the assembly of the entire unit before shipment to Electra.

Propeller Systems

In addition to our work on airframe design and fabrication, Axalp Technologies has also provided all of the propellers used by Electra for the EL2 aircraft. This includes the baseline propellers, as well as an upgraded set with advanced blade design for enhanced low-noise operation.

Aircraft Systems Support

Axalp Technologies also supported the EL2 aircraft with integration design activities to install subsystems into the aircraft, as well as the actual design of some aircraft subsystems. Axalp Technologies lead the design work for the EL2:

  • steering/braking system

  • instrument panel and throttle quadrant

  • protective enclosures for the hybrid batteries

  • electrical distribution units

  • turbine exhaust manifold

Flight Test and Airworthiness Support

Beyond design and fabrication work, Axalp Technologies continues to support Electra with their flight test operations for the EL2 aircraft. This includes support for modifications and improvements to the aircraft and aircraft systems, as well as analysis support when needed for civilian and military airworthiness certification.
